COACHES SUPPORT GRASSROOTS COACHING COURSE: 8th March

Eighteen Westside junior coaches attended the FFA Grassroots Coaching Course at the club on Monday evening 8th March.  The course was held by the club Director of Coaching, Barry McErlean.  The course consisted of discussion based theory and practical sessions on the pitch.  Participants ranged from experienced coaches right through to first time coaches.  It was a great opportunity to share information and for our Westside coaches to come together and get to know each other.  Each participant received a coaching handbook to assist them when planning future training sessions.  Everyone engaged and actively participated in discussion as well as the practical activities on the pitch.  It was a great night for all and the course was the first step in our aim to create consistency in coaching methods and communication between coaches.  Thanks to everyone who attended.  All participants will receive the Grassroots Coaching Certificate which is the first step in obtaining formal coaching qualifications.

WESTSIDE EXPANDS IN 2010: 1st March
Westside is seeing the benefits of our off-season marketting and player development initiatives.  The club is aiming to expand in all directions over the next few years and the growth that we have seen in 2010 is evidence of our commitment to providing player pathways well into the future.  Not only have we experienced an increase in player numbers across all age groups the club has also branched out to the following areas:
  • Commencment of the 'Squirts' program for 3 - 5 year olds.  We were overwhelmed with the level of interest and we are now unable to take more registrations due to the high numbers.  Click here for more info on the 'Squirts' program.
  • Under 13 all-girls team has been formed creating a pathway for our female players. Click here for more information about the girls team.
  • Top Seniors sides promoted to Metro 1 and Metro 1 Reserves.
  • Womens team established.  Click here for more info.
  • Growth in player numbers in under 6 to 10 years.  Local hub competition with neighbouring clubs to continue.  Players in these age groups will play in brand new jerseys in 2010.
  • Youth Team formed to provide direct pathway for under 16 players through to Senior teams.
  • Ongoing submissions of funding grant applications to improve club facilities.
  • Coach education and support.
  • Establishment of second full size feld.
Westside continues to pride iteself on its 'small club' family values, giving personalised attention to every player.  Whilst maintaining these values our aim is to expand over the next few years creating development pathways for both social and talented players.

Congratulations to the players and the coach for all the hard work that has gone into establishing this team.

VOLUNTEER GRANT SUCCESS: 16th February

The proceeds of our successful  Australian Government Volunteers Grant application has gone towards a brand new 32 inch Samsung flat screen TV and installation of an antenna and cables.    The TV will be used by club volunteers and members during social activities at the club.  Visitors to the club will be encouraged to stay on after games to enjoy a cold drink while watching their favourite sport on the big screen.  Friday nights will be spent watching the cricket, Rugby League and the Football World Cup later in the year.  Special thanks to Elaine Parker, Community Liaison Officer, Arana Leagues Club for her help in putting the application together.  Thanks also to Mr. Antenna and Bi Rite Electrical, Albany Creek for their assistance.

2009 WHAT A YEAR:
2009 will be remembered as a land mark year for Westside.  The club achieved so much in terms of player development, funding application success, purchase of playing equipment and jerseys and development of fields.  We have raised our profile in the community and we have received generous support from local businesses in the form of sponsorship.  We have fostered a culture of club spirit and participation through implimentation of new ideas and projects.  We have dynamic new committee members who are committed to propelling Westside forward in 2010 and beyond.
