Westside Grovely FC is a Football (soccer) club located at the Grovely Sports Grounds in Keperra (directly behind Grovely Primary School). We are within the Hills District of North Brisbane surrounded by the suburbs of Grovely, Arana Hills, Keperra, Mitchelton, Ferny Grove and Ferny Hills. We have a proud club history spanning over 50 years.
We provide a family atmosphere and our emphasis is on club spirit and partnerships with the community. We strive to create a pathway from juniors through to seniors. We have a very popular Miniroos program for boys and girls aged 5 to 10, Junior and Senior competitions, and Masters football for men and women.
Our senior Men’s teams compete in the Capital and City competitions, and our Women’s team competes in the City competition.
Westside also proudly hosts the Brisbane Paralympic Football Program which aims to help young people with disabilities to keep active and healthy by performing to the best of their ability. The Program currently has more than 50 athletes supported by numerous volunteers including occupational and physiotherapists.
Westside was established in 1964 and was first known as ‘Budapest Grovely’. The club’s colours (red, green and white) are based on the Hungarian national flag.
The club grew from strength to strength and a number of years later officially changed it’s name to Westside Sports Club as the emphasis changed from being an ethnic club to a club that provided sporting opportunities for the whole community. The club’s main focus is now Football (soccer). In 2009 the club name was changed to Westside Football Club, and in November 2016 the club name was changed to Westside Grovely Football Club, to better reflect our location.
Community spirit, friendship, family and teamwork are the underlying principles of Westside Football Club. We are a small yet thriving club that focuses on the development of Football for all age groups from our under 6s through to our senior men’s and women’s teams.
As members of the Arana Sports Association, Westside is committed to the development of junior Football in the Brisbane Northwest region. We offer development opportunities for our coaches, excellent playing facilities and access to training equipment so that our junior players can progress through to the competition age groups.
Westside continues to pride itself on its ‘small grassroots club’ family values, giving personalised attention to every player. Whilst maintaining these values our aim is to expand over the next few years creating further development pathways for both social and competition players.
2017 message from our Patron, Counsellor Andrew Wines
I am, once again, proud to be Patron to this fantastic local football club, Westside. I have always tried to be a practical patron, and try to assist the club and teams in genuine ways. For example, the new footpath, the upgraded toilets, and the altered car park. These changes are meant to make participation easier.
Each season offers new opportunities for players and teams to succeed and improve. I would encourage all players to get into the spirit of this open and inclusive club and enjoy themselves while playing to win.
Over my time as Patron, I have been most impressed by Westside’s true club and community spirit. There is a great sense of fun throughout the club. Participating in sports is good for both physical and mental health and provides people with skills and opportunities that are valuable all across our lives. Best wishes for another fantastic season.
Cr Andrew Wines, Councilor for Enoggera Ward
