Skills training for development teams: Westside
now offers a Junior Development Progam aimed at players who genuinely
strive to play at a higher level in years to come.
By
offering this program we are providing clear pathways for our
players as they move from junior competition towards senior level. Westside's long term goal is to retain players and to
develop
their football skills. The program provides additional,
higher intensity
training which enhances the 'regular' weekly team training that is
already on offer. Players continue to train and play with their
regular teams however additional training sessions are held during the
week. The aim of the program is to provide extra ball mastery and
football skills training to players who have genuine interest
and
motivation to play at a higher level.
Players
who nominate for the program are expected to demonstrate appropriate
behaviour and attitude, attend training regularly and commit
to
practising repetitive ball mastery skills each day. These
conditions are not meant to restrict any player from participating
however they exist to identify those players who are suitable for the
program based on abilty and attitude towards receiving higher level
football skills training.
The focus of the program is on
individual
ball mastery development and concentrates on change of direction, stops
and starts, feints and general confidence and 'relationship' with the
football. Improvements to team performance will be reflected
through improvements to individual performance.

UNDER 9 DEVELOPMENT TEAM BATTLE
TO THE END AT CARNIVAL :26th
July 2009 The
Westside under 9 development team fought hard in a series of gruelling
encounters with strong teams from all over Brisbane at the Pine Hills
carnival on Sunday 26th July. The games were played at a
very
fast pace in dry conditions. It was an opportunity to
establish
the benchmark that the teams need to strive for in order to be
competitive by the time they reach competition age. This is
the
first step in a long journey of development and despite the fact that
this group of players have rarely played together as a team they are
really starting to bond. We suffered a number of defeats at
the
carnival however each game saw massive improvements in defence,
patience and passing. We still managed to scored some terffic
goals and in terms of the long term development of the team this has
been a great learning experience. Well done to the players
who
fought hard to the very last hooter. The squad will resume
training on Tuesday the 4th August. Team shirts provided by
our sponsor 'A &
S PAINTING'.
UNDER 10 DEVELOPMENT TEAM DOES
WESTSIDE PROUD AT CARNIVAL:21st
July 2009
The
Westside under 10 development team competed against high standard
teams at the Albany Creek Carnival on Sunday 19th July. Teams
came from all over Brisbane and Toowoomba. We won our first
game
1-0 and then had a run of unlucky 1-0 losses. If the luck had
turned our way we could have won these games. The boys played
outside their skin and they competed incredibly hard, we matched it
with every team only to be robbed of the winnng goals by a string of
missed opportunities. The way in which our boys matched it
with
the rep team from Toowoomba and teams from large Brisbane clubs was a
credit to each and everyone of them. The day's highlights included the
goal scored in game one by Daniel Ryder, the long range cracker of a
goal scored in game 2 by Jared Downey and the courageous penalty shot
save in goals by Aaron Haines. The parents and coach were
very proud of the team and they were an absolute credit to Westside.
Thanks again to team sponsor Andrew Graham (Integrated) for
providing the new team shirts.
WESTSIDE DEVELOPMENT TEAMS HAVE
FIRST HIT OUT:11th
July 2009 Thanks
to Mitchelton Football Club for inviting Westside to participate
in carnival style friendly games on Saturday the 11th July at
Mitchelton. A camera crew from the Channel 9 TV show
'Football Stars of Tomorrow' were filming and Brisbane Roar players
Michael Zulo and Ronaldo were also in attendance. The
Westside under 9 and 10 teams had their first real hit out and
performed very well. The teams will have another chance to
put their skills training into practice when they attend carnivals at
Albany Creek on the 19th July (Under 10) and at Pine Hills on the 26th
July (Under 9).
Two great goals, both scored by Thomas Frawley of the under 9 team,
were captured on video.
